Glossary

Cell
A grid established in a computer model to simplify complex situations; in a 50-meter cell, data is taken only at points 50 meters apart, and other information is ignored.
Continental divide
An imaginary line dividing watersheds that feed oceans on opposite sides of the continent.
Coordinates
The system of latitude and longitude which can specify locations on Earth's surface; check out this cool map engine.
Crown fire
A fire that burns in the crowns, or tops, of trees, usually hot and destructive.
Dry tropical forest
A tropical forest located in a seasonally dry area.
Geostationary
Located in an orbit whose orbital period is 24 hours, remaining over one spot on the equator.
Ground fire
A fire that burns along the ground, with minimal burning of tree-tops, generally less destructive than a crown fire.
Propagule
A part of a plant that can produce another plant: including seeds, roots and rhizomes.
Rhizome
An underground, horizontal stem that contains buds, nodes and leaves that look like scales.
Thermodynamics
A branch of physics that explains the effect of temperature and heat, and the conversion of energy from one form to another.
