
Glossary
- Cell
- A grid established in a computer model to simplify complex situations; in a 50-meter cell, data is taken only at points 50 meters apart, and other information is ignored.
- Continental divide
- An imaginary line dividing watersheds that feed oceans on opposite sides of the continent.
- Coordinates
- The system of latitude and longitude which can specify locations on Earth's surface; check out this cool map engine.
- Crown fire
- A fire that burns in the crowns, or tops, of trees, usually hot and destructive.
- Dry tropical forest
- A tropical forest located in a seasonally dry area.
- Geostationary
- Located in an orbit whose orbital period is 24 hours, remaining over one spot on the equator.
- Ground fire
- A fire that burns along the ground, with minimal burning of tree-tops, generally less destructive than a crown fire.
- Propagule
- A part of a plant that can produce another plant: including seeds, roots and rhizomes.
- Rhizome
- An underground, horizontal stem that contains buds, nodes and leaves that look like scales.
- Thermodynamics
- A branch of physics that explains the effect of temperature and heat, and the conversion of energy from one form to another.
