- Carcinogen
- A chemical that causes cancer.
- Emphysema
- A lung disease in which the air sacs are enlarged and damaged, impairing breathing.
- Glial cell
- A support cell in the nervous system.
- Median
- The central number in a list; with equal numbers of larger and smaller items.
- Microdialysis
- A technique for collecting small molecules from specific parts of the brain, for later analysis.
- Neuron
- A cell in the nervous system that is capable of transmitting an electrochemical message.
- Neurotransmitter
- A chemical that carries signals across a synapse, from one neuron to another.
- Nicotine patch
- A nicotine-releasing skin patch, used to prevent withdrawal symptoms while quitting smoking. The nicotine is absorbed "transdermally," or through the skin.
- Positron emission tomography
- A technique to map the emission of particles called positrons from decay of radioactive elements injected into the body.
- Withdrawal symptoms
- Undesirable or harmful effects caused by the removal of a chemical to which the body has become accustomed.
