Glossary
Altimeter. An instrument that tells a plane's altitude.

Autopilot. An automatic system that flies the plane without attention from the pilot.

Circadian. Related to an internal timing mechanism in the body.

Cognitive. Related to thinking, as in memory, decision-making, etc.

Decibel. A measure of sound intensity.

Elevator. Rear of the horizontal stabilizer, used to control the angle of the nose.

Inertial navigation system. A navigation system that uses a gyroscope.

Sleep apnea. A sleep disorder marked by rapid bursts of wakefulness, caused by temporary closure of the airway in the throat.

Stall. Loss of enough lifting power to hold the plane aloft; may be caused by low speed or other factors.

Wake vortex. A persistent, cyclonic disturbance behind an aircraft.

Yaw. Side-to-side movement of the plane's nose.

Yaw damper. A mechanism that automatically counteracts yaw by moving the rudder slightly.
