Aereole A tiny sac in the lung, where the blood exchanges gases with the air.

Algorithm A set of rules for defining the solution to a problem.

Cardiopulmonary Related to the heart or lungs.

Dose-responsoe curve The graph showing the effects of each particular amount of exposure to a chemical or other influence.

Hydrocarbon Molecules composed solely of hydrogen and carbon.

Lichen A class of organisms in which algae and fungi live in a symbiotic relationship as one.

Microgram One millionth of a gram.

Micrometer One millionth of a meter.

Nitrate An air pollutant particle containing the NO3 ion.

Peer review The process scientists use to examine the work of fellow scientists before it is published or accepted within the scientific community.

Statistical power Having enough data to reach the desired goal in a statistical study.

Sulfate A kind of air pollutant containing the SO4 ion.
