The Why Files Blog

Science fact meets science fiction

Posted March 21st, 2009

This just in from a careful reader regarding our Why File on new battery technology.

Comments: I really enjoyed today’s article on the quick-charge
battery, It put me in mind of a science fiction novel called “To Your
Scattered Bodies Go” by [the late] Phillip Jose Farmer, positing a power source
he called the batacitor–a mushroom-shaped quick charge/quick release
battery.

The original story was published in the January 1965 Worlds of
Tomorrow. I guess that moves Mr. Farmer into the ranks of Arthur
Clark, who ‘predicted’ the communications satellite.

I do enjoy your weekly missive. Until next week.
