Sunday, July 18. Reuters news service: "Law enforcement officials in the Florida Keys are mystified by a bizarre new pastime -- young people dangling themselves from meat hooks on a popular sandbar. A young woman, her feet brushing the surface of the shallow water, dangled from the frame, hooks embedded firmly in her shoulders."

With ballooning interest in tattooing, piercing, and other "body modifications," we Why Filers wonder: Where did bod-mod originate? Why do people poke needles and other sharp objects into and through their skin? Is this self-expression or self-mutilation? Is it safe?
