  Second-warmest year
2001 is set to become the second-warmest year since 1867, when recordkeeping began. All 15 of the warmest years have occurred since 1980.

In a press release, Lester Brown of the Earth Policy Institute said, "This additional year of temperature data provides further evidence that a new trend of rising temperature is bringing to an end the period of relative climate stability that has prevailed since shortly after the last Ice Age ended and agriculture began some 11,000 years ago."

Earth's temperature has risen about 0.6 ° C over the past century, said Brown, citing data from NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies. The International Panel on Climate Change projects a further increase of 1.4 ° to 5.8 ° over the next century.
