Smoke is white against the black background of the ocean.

On 11:30 EDT Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2001, smoke from the World Trade Center fires blows south toward New Jersey. This near-infra-red image was taken from MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer), an instrument on the Terra (EOS AM-1) satellite. Courtesy Space Science and Engineering Center.

Smoke is white against the black ocean.

The smoke plume at 10:39 a.m. EDT, imaged in visible light by GOES-8, a National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration geostationary weather satellite. Gary Wade, a NOAA meteorologist at the Space Science and Engineering Center, graphically enhanced the images. These images have one kilometer resolution -- the satellite "sees" objects no smaller than one kilometer across.
