  Five dead in Louisiana
West Nile virus has spread from the Eastern Seaboard to Louisiana. Among 71 confirmed cases statewide, five people are dead.

Map shows the virus in eastern third of United States, mainly east of Mississippi River.

The mosquito-borne disease was first spotted in the United States in New York City in 1999, in an outbreak that caused 62 infections and seven deaths.

The virus causes meningitis or encephalitis, both inflammations of the central nervous system. Meningitis causes fever, headache, stiff neck and light sensitivity. Encephalitis causes light sensitivity, confusion, delirium and trouble walking or talking.

Some victims have no symptoms of the disease, which is generally worst in the young and elderly.

Medical experts are advising the liberal use of mosquito repellents, netting and other measures to reduce exposure to the deadly blood-suckers.
